Retinoblastoma-Fresh Tumor Specimen

  • Use 25 gauge 5/8 inch needle on 5cc syringe.
  • Pull back with some force, don't put air in the eye
  • Look for some tissue, if vitreous comes, eye may flatten
  • Can fill the eye with some saline and 30g if it flattens
  • Remove tenons over injection site to prevent trapping cells
  • Wash eye with saline after pulling out tissue
  • Ensure the tumor cells are in transport media- small white floaters
  • Place on Path specimen report that eye was punctured for cell culture

    • Lab7507 RB1 Gene Analysis full sequence, tumor
    • Lab3621 Miscellaneous Test (use for family members, known mutation) – free text in the comment section “whole blood to be shipped to Impact Genetics, Toronto, Canada for known familial mutation”.
  • Access the forms online . Print the Testing Requisition, Consent and the Sample Instructions.
  • Alert UIHC Mailouts 6-8593 (located on the lower level of PFP) that there will be a sample.
